Heidelberg Question 11

The Heidelberg Catechism leaves us in a peculiar place today.  This question leaves us hanging on the brink of disaster.  Take a minute and ponder what would happen apart from the cross…and why the only way for us to be saved was for the sinless Lamb of God to be slain.

Q. But isn’t God also merciful?

A. God is certainly merciful,^1
but he is also just.^2
His justice demands
that sin, committed against his supreme majesty,
be punished with the supreme penalty—
eternal punishment of body and soul.^3
